Doug Whiteman
Executive Vice President of Business Operations, Penguin Group (USA)

Doug Whiteman was appointed Executive Vice President of Business Operations for Penguin Group (USA) in May 2008. Mr. Whiteman is responsible for working closely with Penguin Group (USA) CEO David Shanks on overall business strategy for the corporation, including identifying growth opportunities in such areas as technology and emerging markets. He also works on global initiatives with Nigel Portwood, Executive Vice President of Global Operations for Penguin Group.

Mr. Whiteman was previously President of the Penguin Young Readers Group beginning in 1997. Prior to heading that division, Mr. Whiteman was Senior Vice President and Publisher of the Putnam & Grosset Group, a precursor to Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers. He was responsible for the overall publishing program, which included five imprints.

Mr. Whiteman began his career with the corporation in 1982 as a sales representative in Denver. In 1986, he moved to New York, assuming the responsibilities of assistant sales and marketing manager. He was promoted in 1987 to director of trade sales and marketing and became a Vice President in 1989. In his positions in sales management he oversaw sales of both the adult and juvenile publishing programs into the national accounts, independents, and mass merchandisers.

Mr. Whiteman was born in 1961. A 1982 graduate of Kansas University's School of Business, he managed two independent bookstores during his college years.
